This is a painting I did for Modern Eden Gallery’s “Femme to Femme Fatale” show, curated by Beautiful Bizarre Magazine. The original sold at the show. With my contribution, “Femme Fatale,” I have explored some of the notions that pop into my head when I hear the words. As a generic stock character a Femme Fatale is somewhat of a trope – an archtype of a seductive dangerous woman, which I definitely embodied in this piece, but I wanted to take the idea a bit further. I’ve juxtaposed some stereoptypically “feminine” imagery (in this case, delicate flowers, Winter’s 19th Century “Cleopatra” illustrations) with “danger” imagery (slithery snake) alongside the beautiful female figure. However rather than a standard nude Eve theme, I have handpainted an approximation of a “censored” pixellation blur.
No matter what strides have been made, how “artistic” an endeavour is, it still seems to me that there are an awful lot of people who seem threatened by nudity. I am not a very controversial artist. But a day does not pass where I don’t receive some sort of criticism, violation report or crude comment on the perceived nudity or sexual content in my work (in most instances completely fabricated or imagined by the viewer). So I have jumped the gun and created this piece as self-censorship – which in the end I feel is more revealing. As with all my “pixelated” paintings, this is done by hand, no computers, no blurring, this is what the painting and subsequent prints actually look like.
Limited Edition Canvas Prints are SOLD OUT. However, we have now released the Open Edition Remarqued Canvas Prints – they are truly the next best thing. They are the same high quality canvases stretched on boards & ready to hang, but are open edition. This means that they are not numbered, not dated, not signed by Jasmine, not embellished by Jasmine in paint. They are however remarqued with metallic ink on the front with the official JBG seal/remarque (as shown in the photo), and come with a Certificate of Authenticty signed by Jasmine herself. The open edition canvases are shaped a bit differently than the sold-out Limited Editions, they are 12″x16″ and are on thicker stretcher boards, so they are a bit deeper. Open Edition Canvases ship from our Kansas location.
