La Belle Dame Sans Merci

A piece I created for the 2019 Tintagel Fairy Fayre – “La Belle Dame Sans Merci” is a theme based on the Alain Chartier poem from the 1400s and later re-worked/re-discovered by Keats and thus the Pre-Raphaelite artists and other Victorian aesthetes in the 1800s co-opted her as a common theme.  Thus it became a popular leitmotif for artists, writers, poets and other creative types over the centuries.  As this was a painting I did specifically to debut at the Tintagel Fairy Fayre at King Arthur’s Hall in Tintagel, Cornwall, UK – the Arthurian overtones fit in great with this piece!  I particularly had fun with the reflections on the early Anglo-Saxon style helmet – based on an actual helmet we saw at the marvelous Wallace Collection near my studio in London.  Poppies are a universal (particularly in the UK) symbol of memorial – veterans, soldiers, those who have perished in wars, etc. which I found well suited for the idea of the remains of a dead knight.   The original acrylic painting herself has already been reserved/sold, we now have prints & canvases available worldwide.. She’s a painting that was be used on promotional materials, tickets, adverts, etc. for FAE Magazine in regard to the Tintagel Fairy Fayre.  “La Belle Dame Sans Merci” translates loosely to “The beautiful woman without mercy” and the Keats version has a lot of faery reference in it, so I found it to be a very suitable piece of artwork for the event/show.  We also did a special enamel pin version of her that was handed out to attendees of the Fairy Fayre in Tintagel!  Many of you may have watched the live broadcast I streamed from my studio while I sketched & painted this painting (and if not, check out my recent broadcasts on Twitch = user ID:  JasmineBecketGriffith  – or the older archives on my YouTube channel user ID = JasmineBecket  ).  In these programs I talk a lot about the history of “La Belle Dame Sans Merci” as an artistic theme & inspiration as well as showing off the predecessors from John William Waterhouse, Frank Dicksee,  Frank Cadogan Cowper, Arthur Hughes,  Walter Crane, etc. from the Victorian era.
